On a recent trip to the local library with my niece and nephews, I noticed a sign on the shelf entitled Five Finger Rule. Since children are often drawn to books because of pretty pictures and bright colors on the cover, this guide is used to help the young [new] readers determine appropriate books for their reading level. If the child is simply reading the book and doesn’t know the words, all they are doing is flipping pages and never fully enjoying everything the book has to offer.
This was an aha moment, because I know so many people who have been drawn to jobs and careers based on the glitzy covers of the title, compensation, or even geographic locations. They are simply going through the motions, but more often than not, they aren’t enjoying it.
If you are not in the appropriate career that matches your skills, potential or dreams, how much fulfillment and joy are you missing?
What if we had a Five Finger Rule to help us determine if we are in the appropriate job or career? Are you in your career because of the external appearances it gives, or are you walking in your called profession? Let’s see.
- Pull out a copy of your resume and read over it for 2 to 3 minutes. Note: If you don’t have an updated copy of your resume, go ahead and hold up 5 fingers now!
- Put one finger up for every time you realize something is missing or unfulfilled.
- If 5 of your fingers go up, then maybe it’s time to consider choosing another career. Better yet, maybe it’s time to finally start the career you truly desire.
- If only 2 or 3 fingers go up, congratulations! You are among the small percentage of people who are in the career that is “just right” for them.
You never know what you’ll find at the library. Who would’ve thought that a simple trip to the kid’s section of the library would reveal a jewel for me to share with you on your journey to finding the ‘right career’!
